General Description:  AP Drawing and AP 2D Art and Design are courses for the serious art student who is interested in an intensive investigation of art concepts, media and techniques after taking Visual Arts 1, 2, and 3. The focus of this class is to prepare students to meet the requirements of the College Board AP Studio Art Portfolio in 2D design or drawing through creating original art pieces. This class will offer students the opportunity to further master their skills in communicating concepts visually, developing their artistic voice, creating strong compositions and increasing techniques in various art media.

Content:  This class will consist of creating art to submit for your AP Portfolio.  The portfolios for AP Drawing and AP 2D Art and Design consists of two sections: Sustained Investigation and Selected Works. The Sustained Investigation requires students to submit images and writing to document their inquiry-guided investigation through practice, experimentation, and revision. Students will produce a minimum of 15 digital images that include works of art and design and process documentation, and will produce typed responses to prompts, providing information about the questions that guided their investigation and how they practiced, experimented, and revised, guided by their questions. This work is submitted digitally.  For the Selected Work section, students select their strongest five pieces to be mailed directly to AP for evaluation.

Strategies:  Students will initially receive direct instruction on specific projects.  Students will submit digital images of works that demonstrate personal artistic growth and development as well as an artist statement in which they describe ideas investigated and explain how the ideas evolved as they created their body of work. All portfolios are assessed by at least two highly experienced studio art educators (AP Studio Art teachers or college faculty) who apply standard scoring criteria, with respect to the composition and content.

Homework:  On average students spend 4-8 hours per week on homework planning, creating and improving their artwork.

AP courses at IHS challenge students with rigorous college-level work. By succeeding in college-level work while still in high school, students in AP courses develop confidence in their own abilities and learn essential time management and study skills needed for college and career success.

AP courses provide the opportunity for students to earn college credits. In order to earn college credit, students must register for the AP exam for this course. AP exam fees vary each year. Scholarships are available for students who qualify. AP exam registration takes place in September and October. College credit can be earned with a passing score on the AP exam, but what the score qualification and amount of credit earned varies by college.
