General Description: This yearlong course aims to advance students’ reading, writing, thinking and speaking skills through the study of contemporary literature. The curriculum will cover a wide range of perspectives in both fiction and non-fiction. Extending upon what students have learned in American Literature, we will focus on understanding how modern literature has developed into what it is today and how it can be useful and enjoyable, simple yet challenging, and familiar but mind-opening. In addition to reading a variety of authors, we will practice writing in a variety of formats. While many of these types of writing are geared toward preparing students for the kinds of writing they may encounter in college, all assignments are designed to be helpful and applicable to any student.
