General Description: This course is designed primarily for seniors to explore local, national and international issues. The hot topics covered in this class require a large amount of reflection and discussion with classmates. The class will focus on immigration, terrorism, the military, gun control, school violence, technology, the environment, child soldiers, the justice system, animal rights, food consumption and factory farming, natural disasters in the U.S. and around the world. The course will culminate with a final project where students present a current issue that is important to them, sharing it with their classmates and answering the question “what can I possibly do to help?” Students will be required to empower themselves by creating an action plan for helping/raising awareness about an issue that speaks to them personally. This course earns a required senior social studies credit if it is taken as a senior.
