General Description: Students in this Art History class will explore architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within historical and cultural contexts. From the Paleolithic Period to Post-modernism students will understand and value works of art as products of their geographic, ethical, and political contexts. Students will understand cultural and historical developments through the lens of key visual arts movements, works, artists, and themes. Students will be required to use critical thinking skills to analyze visual cues of content, design symbols, techniques, and media.

Content: Foundational Concepts, Vocabulary and Analytical Lenses of Art, Art of Prehistoric and Ancient Cultures , Greek and Roman Art , Art of the Far East and the Americas , The Rise of Christianity and Islam--Art of the Middle Ages, Renaissance Art, Baroque Art , Rococo to Realism , Impressionism and Modernism , Postmodernism

Strategies: Students will learn through a combination of :

  • Writing comprehensively/analytically
  • Identifying art work’s subject/iconography
  • Identifying art work’s style/technique
  • Identifying media of artwork
  • Identifying art work’s significance in the context of the period and culture; examining issues such as politics, religion, patronage, gender, function, and. ethnicity.
