Learning Recommendations: Students must have taken the first year of this course, SCI650 - IB Biology HL 1, to be eligible to sit for the IB exam for this course. A grade of "B" or better is highly encouraged in IB Biology HL 1. Proficient in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets. Completion of SCI300 - Chemistry recommended.

General Description: This IB course builds and expands on the curriculum of IB Biology HL 1. This course will prepare students for university-level biology courses, and is the second of a two year progression that prepares students for sitting for the Higher Level exam in May.

This course fulfills one (1) college prep science requirement, as outlined by the Higher Education Board of the State of Washington (HEC Board), as a lab-based science course.

Content:

  • Human Anatomy and Physiology, including:
    • Excretion
    • Neurobiology
    • Muscular systems
    • Immune system
  • Cellular respiration
  • Photosynthesis
  • Ecology and human impact on ecosystems
  • Plant science
  • Completion of an independent research investigation (the “internal assessment.”)

The sequence and specific content units may vary based on student interest and preference. Students sitting the IB exam in May should expect to spend independent preparation time outside of class
