General Description:  This course offers the study of American society through the lens of popular culture, specifically music and the arts.  This course will focus on a study of the history of music.  Beginning at the dawn of the twentieth century, students will follow the development and the rise of popular music, including blues, jazz and rock, while examining how historical events influenced and were influenced by music and the arts. We will finish with a look at where music and the arts seem to be headed as we blaze a path into the 21st century.

Content:  An historic examination of the development of major American Genres in Popular Music.

Strategies:  Listening to music and developing the skills to critically evaluate the structure and social content of American Popular music.

Homework:  Mostly investigating / listening to songs.
