Learning Recommendations: Introduction to Sports Medicine

General Description: This is an extension of Introduction to Sports Medicine. Specific course content includes advanced emergency medicine, athletic injuries of the body, basic treatment and care of athletic injuries, and numerous hands-on competencies such as taping/wrapping techniques, emergency procedures, and athletic equipment fitting/removal.


  • Anatomy, physiology, kinesiology for each region of the body covered (i.e. ankle, knee, shoulder, abdomen, etc)
  • Mechanisms of athletic injuries
  • Signs and symptoms that may be present at the time of injury
  • Immediate care and treatment of athletic injuries
  • Evaluation of athletic injuries
  • Preventative techniques such as taping, wrapping and safety precautions

Strategies:  Students learn through a combination of:

  • Lecture/Discussion
  • Independent study
  • Critical thinking exercises
  • Multimedia offerings
  • Demonstrations (teacher or student directed)

Homework:  This course has an in-class portion and out-of-class portion since this is a multiple credit class. Homework for the classroom portion of this class in less than 20 minutes per day consisting of reviews days topics and occasionally complete classwork that was not finished during class time. Out of class includes a 180 hrs of after school observation (90 per semester, which averages to about 5 hours per week of school for the entire year) and an online learning component (about 5 hours per week). The out-of-class components are required for state standards and the tech prep eligibility.

CTE Dual Credit:  This course is CTE Dual Credit approved and articulated with Bellevue College or Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Students who demonstrate proficiency of the college course competencies with a ‘B’ (3.0) or better grade may be eligible to earn college credit through the Tech Prep program. Students MUST register for CTE Dual Credit while they are enrolled in the high school course and also are required to pay a non-refundable $50 annual consortium fee.
