General Description: This course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and increases students’ foundational mathematical skills necessary for success in Algebra 1. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout this course and together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problems.

Content: Critical Areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Integers and other Number Sets
  • Order of Operations
  • Ratios, Proportions, and Percents
  • Estimation
  • Exponents and Radicals
  • The Rectangular Coordinate System
  • Sets and Logic
  • Algebraic Expressions
  • Solving First-Degree Equations and Inequalities.

Strategies:  Students will learn through a combination of:

  • Direct instruction
  • Collaborative instructional approach
  • Technology enhanced instruction

Homework:  Daily homework for this class should be expected to vary between 10 minutes and 20 minutes, depending on the student (math knowledge, if they use their time wisely in class, etc). Studies suggest that daily small doses of practice is better for learning math. Practice problems revisit concepts learned in math class in order to solidify learning. The intent of homework is for practice and feedback, not necessarily for assessing skill. Students typically go over the homework in class the next day. Completing and correcting homework is a portion of a student’s grade.
