Liberty HS

General Description: This year-long course explores classical mythology and literature from multiple cultures. The course focuses on the establishment and importance of archetypes from these classical myths and legends. The course has a comparative focus, analyzing how the archetypes and themes of these classical periods helped shape later historical literature, as well as its influence on popular contemporary literature and film.  This class explores different methods of literary and film analysis. Students need to be prepared to complete regular reading assignments. Students will read and analyze primary translated works and adapted readings, and will also do independent research, reading, and analysis exploring how the classical works are echoed in more modern storytelling.  Writing will focus on literary analysis and comparative study, but in a variety of formats.  While many of these types of writing are geared toward preparing students for the kinds of writing they may encounter in college, all assignments are designed to be helpful and applicable to any student.
