Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of SS662A/B – IB Theory of Knowledge 1. Students should be able to analyze and synthesize information to construct written and oral arguments. IB Diploma candidates must take this course.

General Description: IB Theory of Knowledge (TOK) examines the assumptions, concepts, and problems underlying the basic disciplines of history, mathematics, language, physical and social sciences, and the arts, and provides students with an elementary understanding of the interrelationships among those disciplines. In this class, students will inquire into the ways one has constructed knowledge, the ways one judges the value of knowledge, the ways knowledge is conveyed, and the relationship between knowledge and values.

This course will also provide support for the Extended Essay (EE) and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) as required for the IB Diploma.

Senior Diploma candidates will continue to cover topics such as the nature of the mind, ethics, ways of knowing, and the nature of language and thought as studied through the lens of various areas of knowledge (history, math, science, the arts, etc.).

Strategies: Students will learn through a combination of Socratic seminars, student-led discussions, reading challenging texts, student presentations, individual research, and interviews. Students will also learn by creating presentations, constructing examples of art, written history, and scientific knowledge. Diploma candidates will be discussing, journaling, and blogging to support their TOK learning.

Note: Both SS662A/B – IB Theory of Knowledge 1 AND IB Theory of Knowledge 2 must be completed to qualify for the IB Diploma.
